Burnt Wood

In the spring of 2017, when living in Hackney, London, I walked past a garage that had just burnt down. High up above a door that was still standing I saw this beautiful piece of wood that reminded me of a burnt city, seen from above, but in a beautiful way.

I kept walking past it and got obsessed by wanting to have it in my studio to photograph it properly. Eventually I mustered the courage to get a jigsaw and a ladder and on a quiet Sunday I went there with a friend to saw it down. Since then I’ve been experimenting and here are some of the results. All shot on 67 medium format film or 54 large format film.
